At one time or another almost every waterworks employee has opined that he or she could do as good a job as—or a better job than—the boss. The boss may be an immediate supervisor, the superintendent, or even the general manager. What does it take to become the boss? The unspoken rules for advancement in the waterworks profession are at least as important as the more obvious steps. The article discusses the most straightforward steps that an entry‐level operations employee could take, as well as the unspoken rules for professional advancement.
