Because many of the valves in a water distribution system are buried beneath roads, sidewalks, or landscapes, maintenance requirements can be costly to the utility and disruptive to the public. This paper discusses valve selection criteria, purchasing specifications, storage and installation practices, maintenance records, and valve exercise programs. By selecting and properly maintaining the right valves, the amount of maintenance required will be minimized.
