One of the most intense situations that can develop in a water treatment facility is a chlorine leak. While most leaks are minor, it only takes a small amount of chlorine to create an emergency situation. A release of 30 ppm of chlorine is considered immediately dangerous to life and health. A well‐developed emergency plan is the best protection for employees, the public, and the environment. This paper makes suggestions for improving emergency plans and responding to chlorine leaks.
