This method of improving the operation of steel grating hatch doors results from 10 years' worth of opening and closing the doors! The basic problem is that, because of the heavy weight of the grate openings, workers have a tendency to leave an opened grate in the open position (creating a safety hazard) or in the closed position (deterring operator duties). This counterweight allows a single plant operator to open or close grate doors without risking back injury.
