In 1993, the City of Austin, Texas, initiated the Xeriscape It! rebate program for residential water customers. The program provides up to $240 in rebates to participants who install drought‐tolerant buffalo and bermuda grass, low‐water‐use‐shrubs, or water‐efficient ground covers in areas receiving more than six hours of sun each day. The program promotes the seven principles of Xeriscape while providing an incentive for using water‐efficient plant material.
