Since before the Cape San Juan Water District on San Juan Island, Washington, was formed, those volunteers in the community responsible for operation of the water system have made a strong effort to keep everyone informed of the system's conditions and problems. Members of the brigade derive a lot of satisfaction because they help to preserve the district's fragile water supply, saving the district—and themselves‐‐a lot of money. The brigade also gets formal recognition by the water district at the community annual meeting.
