Over time, a calcium‐type buildup, called struvite, formed on the drums of our belt filter presses. Struvite, a bond of calcium, fatty oils, and polymer, plugged drum holes and decreased press dewatering capability. We tried many methods to remove the struvite buildup from our three belt filter presses. To solve this problem, we developed an easy procedure to clean the drums. We simply place a small amount of 1‐in. river rock inside the drum. As the rocks rotate in the drum, the drum is cleaned of excess struvite buildup.
