Several recent waterborne disease outbreaks have been attributed to the organism Cryptosporidium. Protecting the public from waterborne transmission of this organism must be a high priority for municipal drinking water suppliers. The author discusses: how the organism is transmitted; its occurrence in the environment; and the symptoms of the disease. He concludes by stating that the infective dose is not known.
