Current drinking water treatment technologies have been in place with only minor modifications for several decades. However, the current regulatory climate, coupled with the public's changing expectations, is triggering revolutionary, not evolutionary, changes in the drinking water industry. The resulting high‐tech approaches to water treatment will inevitably lead to increased costs for water purveyors and their customers. This article discusses several treatment options, but does not give figures on costs.
