The rule's purpose is to protect the public from waterborne diseases. Considering the variety of water conditions, local conditions and methods of treatment, the rule permits a number of treatment options to remove or inactivate disease‐causing organisms. This article summarizes the reasons for the regulation and means of disinfection.
