Operators frequently have difficulty checking the condition of the schmutzdecke while the slow sand filter is being operated. The device described in this article allows samples to be drawn so that the schmutzdecke can be easily analyzed without any damage to the sand surface during operation of the filter. Instructions for making the sampler are given.
