Leak detection programs can achieve many benefits, including the obvious advantage of reducing water losses. Repairing leaks saves money for the utility by reducing power costs to deliver water and chemical costs to treat water. Another not so obvious advantage is the expanded knowledge of the distribution system for operators and managers, which results in better service for customers. This article provides an introduction to reasons for leak detection efforts; an accompanying article (p. 1, 3) offers 12 steps to determine if a leak detection program is appropriate for your system.
