Public concern about the quality of drinking water has led to a dramatic increase in the use of point‐of‐use (POU) water treatment devices in homes and other buildings. For the most part, this sudden growth has occurred in a regulatory vacuum. This lack of regulation has resulted in a large potential for the abuse of the consumer by some unscrupulous individuals. This article discusses POU devices and types of abuse, such as faulty maintenance instructions, unsubstantiated claims, deceptive sales tactics, and misuse of water‐testing techniques.
