This article is the second part of a three‐part article on operation and maintenance of filtration systems. This part focuses on the upkeep of filter media. Problems that can develop in the filter media include mudballs, cracks and separations. During scheduled maintenance the following areas should be checked: bed depth, size of media, number of mudballs, surface‐wash units, gravel, and the underdrain.
