This article discusses the hazards encountered while conducting tests in confined spaces. These hazards include insufficient natural ventilation, oxygen‐deficient environments, and the presence of toxic or flammable gases or vapors. Precautions are listed which will help water utility personnel detect and correct unsafe conditions in manholes and other confined spaces before the conditions become life‐threatening.
