This article discusses community agencies that will become involved in the event of a hazardous materials emergency and how a water utility can work with these agencies to develop a coordinated emergency plan. The roles of the following agencies are discussed: fire department, law enforcement, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response teams, Office of Emergency Preparedness (Disaster Emergency Services), news media, and utility personnel. Legal considerations are addressed.
