When backwashing filters, agitating the top layer of sand and anthracite with high pressure water helps break up the hard spots and loosen the filtered particles and lime deposits in the media. This produces a more even backwash and a much cleaner filter. The filter scrubber described in this article is used as an inexpensive means of agitating the filter. Materials needed to construct the filter scrubber and a diagram showing construction details are included.
