This article deals with the cleaning of water mains to remove encrustations and tuberculation, to improve hydraulic capacity, and to assist in eliminating turbidity, tastes, odor, and other contamination. Initial procedures, including planning and notification of interested parties, are described. Cleaning methods such as air purging, swabs, and pigs are discussed, and final procedures to be completed after the cleaning process are detailed. The author also stresses the importance of monitoring and evaluation of water quality in order to find the causes of water quality problems so that preventive measures can be instituted or revised.
