There are two types of equipment maintenance, preventive maintenance and breakdown maintenance. This article outlines five basic features of a sound maintenance policy. Responsibility for maintenance must be clearly defined and assigned to competent personnel. Management must state clearly its maintenance objectives. Proper tools, spare parts, test instruments, and maintenance facilities must be provided. Preventive action must be planned for and scheduled. An adequate system of written records and reports, including preventive maintenance forms, unscheduled maintenance reports, and property and calendar maintenance directories, must be used to control the program.
