This article describes the appearance, attempts at elimination, and a possible explanation for the Plumatella bryozoan which began growing on filters in the Southern Nevada Water System, which services Las Vegas, Nevada and surrounding areas. Laboratory tests and application of HTH, copper sulfate, and potassium permanganate at concentration above those normally considered lethal had no effect on the Plumatella. After one year, the Plumatella disappeared on its own. One explanation for its demise is that prechlorination was increased from previous levels.
