A problem that plagues water treatment plants in cold climates is ice forming on open settling basins and filters. This article outlines steps taken by treatment plants in Granite City and East St. Louis, Illinois to deice treatment equipment. Deicing units work on the principle of agitating the water, thus preventing ice formation. An air stone and a propeller type deicer are discussed.
