Pretreatment, defined as any physical, chemical, or mechanical process used on water prior to the main treatment process, can be used to reduce the load on the main treatment processes. This article discusses the four basic methods of pretreatment, namely screening, chemical treatment, presedimentation, and microstraining. Proper cleaning and maintenance should accompany any pretreatment process and accurate, up‐to‐date records should be kept.
