This article discusses the manufacturing process of lime, types of lime, and safety precautions and storage of lime. Integrated and unintegrated processing of limestone into lime are discussed. Types of lime discussed include quicklime (CaO) and hydrated or slaked lime (Ca(OH)2). Both quicklime and hydrated lime should be stored in cool, dry areas. Care should be taken to avoid mixtures of alum and quicklime, since quicklime tends to absorb the water that forms as alum crystalizes away from the alum. The hazards of handling lime are those of a fairly active chemical dust.
