Most utility crew trucks carry only normal‐size valve keys to be used for opening valves. If a longer key is needed, a trip back to the shop must be made. To save these extra trips, a variable length valve key can be used. This article describes the necessary materials needed to design and construct a variable length key. The key can be extended from 5.5 feet to 10 feet and costs approximately $15.00 to assemble.
