The most commonly‐used coagulant in water treatment is aluminum sulfate or alum. This article discusses the manufacturing process of alum, its chemical formula, storage and transmission of the coagulant, and safety precautions to be taken during the handling and storage of alum. Alum is extremely acidic. Therefore, storage tanks should either be lined with rubber or made of stainless steel, and protective clothing, gloves, goggles, and a face shield should be worn by those handling alum.
