This article is part two of a series on cross‐connection control and defines and discusses devices that protect against cross connections. Six devices that are commonly used to protect against cross connections include air gaps, atmospheric vacuum breakers, pressure vacuum breakers, double check‐valve assemblies, reduced‐pressure‐zone (RPZ) backflow preventers, and barometric loops. Discussion also covers when and where a particular type of backflow‐ prevention device should be used. Parts I and III appeared in the January and March 1983 issues of OpFlow.
