Official memos issued by the Water Supply and Waste Section of the State of Washington Department of Social and Health Services following the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens kept water utility operators aware of the effects of the volcanic activity on water supplies as these effects were recognized. In the examples shown, ashfall effects on drinking water, volcano damage to public water systems, increased water usage, ash cleanup, mudflow damage, and additional treatment costs are covered.
