The natural microbial flora found in surface waters, such as algae, bacteria, and yeast, are perfectly safe and do not cause any diseases until human waste is added to the water. This flora does, however, cause taste and odor problems in the water. This paper discusses waterborne diseases and infection, the bacteriological indicators of waterborne disease, and the causes of taste and odor problems that may occur.
