A discussion of the value and importance of record keeping is presented. Records should be detailed and tailored to meet the demands of each particular utility. Records should be permanent, so entries should be made with ink or indelible pencil. Filing is also important and the system should be understood by everyone having contact with the records. Also, records should be kept for as long as they are useful, and there may be some legal requirements setting minimum lengths for their retention. The type of information presented in reports is also discussed.
