Proper disinfection of water mains will prevent health hazard to consumers. One way to disinfect mains is through chlorination. Chlorine comes in three forms, gas, calcium hypochlorite, and sodium hypochlorite. Since chlorine could be harmful, workers should be well aware of the safety precautions to use when handling chlorine. In order to assure proper cleaning of the mains the crews must be well trained and the type of chlorine used must be properly applied. The continuous flow method of chlorine application is covered.
