Many houses still have meters with mechanical drive couplings utilizing the stuffing box as a means of driving the register gears to indicate the amount of water used. The problem with this type of meter is that the stuffing box sometimes leaks, causing damage to floors and walls. To avoid damage claims from such leaks, the Elizabethtown Water Company in New Jersey started using PTFE packing, cut from rods and drilled to specification to stop the leaks. They have not had a failure since 1968 and have installed the packing in over 81,000 meters.
