Recent collections and studies of an unusual species of Acanthaceae from the dry forests of northwestern Mexico reveal it to be generically distinct. Aphanosperma comprises a single species, A. sinaloensis , and is included in the Ruellioideae: Justicieae: Odontoneminae near Carlowrightia. At least four characteristics of the capsule appear to be unique in the family, including progressive reflexing during maturation and permanent retention of the seeds in the capsule valves which thus become the diaspores. The species is shown to be self‐compatible and fully autogamous.
