In etiolated bean seedlings there is a starch sheath around the vascular stem tissue. This cell layer shows a gradient of amyloplast number and cell dimensions. We demonstrated a maximum relative amyloplast pressure in the stem hook. Cytological as well as physiological arguments indicate that the stem hook may play an important role in graviperception through this starch sheath.
