Studies of the exine of Trichospira verticillata (L.) Blake reveal a modified Anthemoid (Liabioid) ultrastructural pattern linking the genus to the Vernonieae rather than the Heliantheae. This lends further support to Robinson and Brettell's transfer of the genus from the Heliantheae to the Vernonieae (Robinson and Brettell, 1973).
