Median longitudinal sections of shoot apical meristems of Echinocereus engelmannii were photographed such that the location of each cell was mapped. The maps of the peripheral zone and the pith‐rib meristem were divided into upper, middle, and lower thirds, and then the upper and lower regions were analysed stereologically. Statistical comparisons of the upper regions vs. the lower regions within each zone indicate that there are no significant differences between them. The cells do not change detectably as they “flow” from the top of the meristem to the bottom.
