Melilotus alba (Leguminosae) populations from mine sites in southwestern Wisconsin were shown to be ecotypically adapted to high levels of zinc in the soil. In greenhouse experiments using high‐zinc soil and high levels of zinc in sand culture, seedlings from mine populations grew better and suffered less mortality than did seedlings from roadside populations.
