The flowering shoot of Urginea maritima constitutes an interesting one‐dimensional growth system. Stalk emergence from the bulb is completed in a few days and is followed by a characteristic very rapid pattern of subapical elongation, with stalk growth rates approaching 3 mm/hr. This elongation system, similar to root tips and other biological materials, has characteristics that may prove it to be a valuable tool for biological studies, as well as for investigating chemical aspects of biological elongation phenomena.
