Statistical tests show that the ten large chromosomes of Emilia praetermissa Milne‐Redhead were derived from E. coccinea (Sims) G. Don while the remaining ten small chromosomes of E. praetermissa were derived from E. sonchifolia (L.) DC. It is shown too that mean length of chromosomes is smaller and more variable among the cells of diploids (species and hybrids) than of tetraploids. The nature and probable mechanisms of control of size differences among the complements are discussed.
