Two isolates of the red alga Bangia fuscopurpurea have been cultured for over 3 years. The diplobiontic life history consists of morphologically dissimilar generations, the Bangia‐ and Conchocelis ‐phases. The life history includes reproduction of the thallus by monospores and conchospores and of Conchocelis by carpospores. Spore germination and development into the two plant types are described. The chromosome number of both Bangia‐ and Conchocelis ‐phases is 3.
