Through the use of eight markers, which included six plasmodial fusion markers, the plasmodial color locus (b 1 ) and the mating locus (A), three linkage groups with two markers each were recognized. The other two markers segregated independently. An estimation of the haploid chromosome number in Didymium iridis has been made. Based on a Poisson distribution, a reasonable estimate would be about six to sixteen chromosomes.
