The genus Iodophanus is a segregate of the coprophilous genus Ascophanus . It is characterized by the presence of callose‐pectic marked spores, diffuse amyloidy of asci, carotenoid pigments in paraphyses and excipular cells, and an Oedocephalum imperfect state in some species. It consists of 10 species which may be distinguished by (1) the nature of spore ornamentation, (2) size and shape of spores and asci, and (3) the arrangement of excipular cells. Four new combinations are made and two new species, Iodophanus helotinus and I. granulipolaris , are introduced. Keys, descriptions, and illustrations are given for all taxa treated herein.
