Catalpa speciosa is interesting in that the phyllotaxy of the lateral shoots can be either decussate or whorled. The pattern appears to be correlated with the number of buds which emerge. The arrangement is not related to dormancy; nor does the stage of development of the bud at the time of bud break influence the phyllotaxy. The control of bud break appears to be related to the position of the bud on the stem. Possible mechanisms controlling the lateral shoot pattern are discussed.
