A study was made of 50 detached lycopsid megasporophylls in coal balls of middle Pennsylvanian age from Illinois. Direct comparison of these specimens with those reported from Great Britain by D. H. Scott in 1901 and considered by him as the immature stage of Lepidocarpon lomaxi Scott shows no difference between them. Furthermore, the study shows that these sporophylls and those of Scott are not the immature stage of L. lomaxi but represent a different taxon. Comparison of the British and American material with the descriptions and illustrations of Russian specimens assigned by Snigirevskaya in 1964 to Lepidostrobus takhtajanii reveals that all represent the same taxon. Accordingly, the British and American specimens are assigned to L. takhtajanii . An emended description of L. takhtajanii Snig. is given based on additional information obtained in this study. Relationships of lycopsid megasporophylls are discussed.
