The mode of division in vegetative nuclei of an isolate of Rhizoctonia solani Kühn, ( Pellicularia filamentosa [Pat.] Rogers), from diseased cotton seedlings was studied with the aid of light and phase‐contrast microscopy. The studies were made using the squash technique and refluxed aceto‐carmine for staining. Observations showed that mitotic mode of division similar to that in higher plants was present and the haploid chromosome number was four at metaphase. These findings are discussed with respect to the modes of division proposed for vegetative nuclei in the fungi.
