E sau , K atherine . (U. California, Santa Barbara.) Ultrastructure of differentiated cells in higher plants. Amer. Jour. Bot. 50(5): 495–506. Illus. 1903.—This paper reviews the rather meager information on differences between meristematic and fully differentiated cells of higher plants at the ultrastructural level. It includes personal observations on differentiated cells in Cucurbita maxima and Vitis vinifera , particularly those of the phloem tissue. The structures considered and illustrated by means of electron micrographs are vacuoles, the nucleus, mitochondria, the endoplasmic reticulum, dictyosomes, plasmodesmata, and, briefly, plastids.
