R eeder , J ohn R. (Yale U., New Haven, Conn.) The bambusoid embryo: a reappraisal. Amer. Jour. Bot. 49(6): 639–641. Illus. 1962.—The embryo in members of the Bambuseae is shown to have a vascular system of the festucoid type. This is contrary to a previous report in which this character was considered to be panicoid. Embryos of representatives of 9 different genera are discussed and figured. The corrected formula for the bamboo embryo is given as F + P P , and it is pointed out that on the basis of embryo structure, bamboos cannot be distinguished from those grasses designated as oryzoid‐olyroid. It is suggested that these might all be included within a single subfamily, the Bambusoideae. Six genera (Bromuniola, Centotheca, Lophatherum, Megastachya, Orthoclada , and Uniola) with embryos of the formula P + P P are also discussed. This group is designated the centothecoid, and it is pointed out that they appear to be transitional between bambusoid and chloridoid‐eragrostoid grasses.
