G oos , R oger D. (Central Research Laboratories, United Fruit Co., Norwood, Mass.) The occurrence of Sphaerostilbe repens in Central American soils. Amer. Jour. Bot. 49(1): 19–23. Illus. 1962.—The isolation of the rhizomorphic ascomycete Sphaerostilbe repens B. and Br. from soils of Honduras and Costa Rica is reported, apparently the first record of this fungus in Central America. Morphology of the fungus is described and illustrated. Rhizomorph production in culture was affected by the type and depth of the medium upon which the fungus was grown and was favored by deep substrates. There was considerable variation in the extent of rhizomorph production among the 10 isolates studied, and there appeared to be an inverse relationship between the production of aerial mycelium and the formation of rhizomorphs. The rhizomorphs were shown to be ageotropic.
