The name Family Therapy allows for an eclecticism of ideas and practices. This has advantages and disadvantages for clinicians. The purpose of this paper is to encourage on‐going discussion and reflection on the changing nature of therapeutic ideas and practices. The impact of commodity thinking on the evolution of ideas and practice is discussed. A process of self‐reflection is suggested in order to assist therapists to protect themselves from the influence of commodity thinking. Patricia Grace
