This paper expands on an earlier publication (1984), by the author. The earlier paper hypothesized that there were three levels of ‘pathological triangles’ in a stuck supervisory system. These triangles constituted a ‘defence’ against issues of attachment‐detachment from the family of origin for both supervisor and therapist. The current paper discusses the ideas which led to the development of the earlier theory and if utilises a case discussion format to illustrate the application of the theory in a stuck supervisory system. It is argued that this is a useful model for teaching neutrality.
