A group was formed of friendless couples, selected from an outpatient clinic for chronic schizophrenics, with the aim of promoting a friendship network. The group was semi‐closed and functioned for nearly two years. The leaders' aims were met, the group terminating after a secure friendship network had formed. Phases of the group process are described and the value and limitations of such groups discussed.
